The songs of Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II have long been honored as some of Broadway's best and would be usually associated with large orchestras and/or exaggerated semi-operatic belting. But here Karrin Allyson defies the above stereotypes and sings these classic tunes in a subtle understated conversational fashion and backs herself with only a piano & bass. Thus, songs like I Have Dreamed & Something Wonderful are stripped of their melodramatic flamboyance and performed as tender intimate ballads. On numbers like Happy Talk & The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, Karrin and her band take things further by swinging away with confidence. Her pianist (Kenny Barron) and bassist (John Patitucci) are always supportive; shining when it's the time and space to solo but unobtrusive when Karrin's performing Hammerstein's top-notched lyrics. All in all, an enjoyable laid-back celebration of Rodgers & Hammerstein that's sure to thrill any vocal jazz fan, Karrin Allyson supporter or Rodgers & Hammerstein devotee.
