Before the diva makeover that Sony Records gave Lara Fabian in the late '90s, she was just another fun-loving French pop star. Landing somewhere between Sarah McLachlan and Kathy Dennis, Fabian brings her considerable vocal talents to dance on her eponymous debut. Oddly enough, the album does not offer that many chances for her to showcase her range, instead opting to only have her occasionally soar to the upper registers. The pop songs she has to perform here lack the grace of her later material, but they have a naïve innocence about them that has been lacking from her music ever since. The songs are very catchy, very simple, and very good, which is why she became an international name in the first place. The album is completely in French, which could turn off some listeners, but this should appeal to anyone who enjoys her later material as well as fans of the early-'90s female pop scene in general.
